Søren Kierkegaard - founder of existentialist philosophy

"Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards."
Søren Kierkegaard

Today is the anniversary of Søren Kierkegaard's birth. He was born May 5, 1813. Mr. Kierkegaard argued that actual life cannot be contained within an abstract conceptual system. He hoped to open the way for an adequate consideration of faith. He argued that there existed a gulf between God and man that faith alone can bridge.

Oh yes indeed, the size of the gulf between man & god is everything that isn't man, and that is as huge as eternity.
Sorry,it's beyond hugeness.
It's "I don't know".

Does this have to be? Is man doomed to forever tread so far from his maker?

Hehehehe.....the size of the gulf is huge, no man can bridge....but maybe God can bridge...? Maybe a God-man can do it...
Anyways, my Mom is fine, but still in hospital. And heavily on morphine! She is becoming a drug addict.
I am going to the hospital daily to see her...And we probably spending Mother's Day in hospital too :-)

I hope your mother's recovery continues to proceed quickly. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Faith is a thorny question. In "Fear and Trembling" Kierkegaard spends some time considering Abraham and his astonishing faith as evidenced by his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. Today we have Christian Scientists that are willing to withhold medical treatment as a sign of faith but the government often intervenes. Are Christian Scientists misguided or is their faith to be admired? I don't know. Kierkegarrd, I suspect, would have admired them. Despite being a very logical man his deepest admiration was for the person that could shed the jacket of logic and embrace the fearsome starkness of faith.
