Download Your Brain???

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

According to a story at CNN.com, there is a good possibility that people will be able to download their brain to a supercomputer in the near future.
"If you're rich enough then by 2050 it's feasible. If you're poor you'll probably have to wait until 2075 or 2080 when it's routine," he said.
An interesting concept but I am left to wonder about what the purpose of such a thing might be. Honestly, are we going to have a real purpose behind this? We are cautioned to back up the data on our computers in case there are problems making it necessary to reformat. Am I to believe that once we've downloaded our brains, we have some kind of safeguard against braindamage?

This is a realm of science fiction that we've yet to touch the surface in real life. I don't know many people that are willing to plug their cranium into a computer or other such device.

I suppose it's just like recording a model to export to cyber and non biological life.
But it sounds more like a memorial story about a deceased individual.

Personality is not just what's in your brain, nature does the duplicating in a more interesting way, don't you think ?

The memorial story seems very much like a movie I saw recently - Final Cut, in which some people have a chip implanted in their head that records their entire life. The picture takes a pretty grim view of the possibilities that such a device might create.

Yes, personality and the manner in which our brains work are far more interesting than anything we've ever created.

Yes, so we can study lateralization of the brain, to see how bilinguals or multilinguals use their brains...how plastic they are....

As I get older it seems more and more useful to have some sort of offboard memory device. If you could file and index that downloaded memory I'd sign up in a minute!

It seems to exist utenzi, what are computers?

Is there a possibility that something in your head might be private enough that you would rather not share it? Not all of us have deep dark secrets; however, I'm relatively certain that there are lighter, less imposing thoughts each of us would rather not share with the outside world.

The problem with computers is that you type words into them. Memories are so much more complex. You can make a memo about that day you first saw your baby but you don't hear the sounds, smell the odors, or feel the emotional nuances of the moment. Computers are good memory aids but they surely don't replace our memories.
